Conditions We Treat with Physiotherapy

Our South Edmonton physiotherapists treat a wide range of musculoskeletal, neurological, and chronic pain conditions. Whether you're recovering from surgery, managing a sports injury, or dealing with persistent pain that hasn't responded to other treatments, we can help.

Common conditions we treat include:

Back Pain and/or Sciatica are some of the most common reasons patients seek physiotherapy in Edmonton. Our team assesses the root cause, whether it's a nerve irritation, muscular issue, or disc problem, and builds a treatment plan around your specific presentation. Sciatica, characterized by radiating pain down the leg, often responds well to a combination of manual therapy, targeted exercise, and Gunn IMS or Medical Acupuncture.

Neck Pain and Headaches are frequently connected to repetitive stresses, joint stiffness, muscle dysfunction and past injuries. Our physiotherapists use manual therapy techniques, dry needling and exercise-based rehabilitation to address these patterns and reduce recurrence.

Shoulder Pain spanning from rotator cuff injuries to frozen shoulder to post-surgical recovery requires thorough assessment and individualized treatment. Our team works through the full range of shoulder presentations, helping you restore pain-free movement and strength.

Sports Injuries can occur, whether you're a highly competitive athlete or a weekend warrior. When you're dealing with a sprained ankle, runner's knee, IT band syndrome, a ligament injury, or a dislocated shoulder, our physiotherapists understand the demands of an active lifestyle and your need to return as soon as possible. Sports physiotherapy at Thrive Therapy focuses on both recovery, return-to-sport readiness and prevention of re-injury, so you come back stronger than before.

Chronic Pain, also known as persistent pain, is characterized by pain that lingers beyond a normal healing timeline; it responds differently than acute injuries. Our team takes an integrative approach to chronic pain, combining hands-on treatment, pain neuroscience education, and graded rehabilitation to reduce pain and improve function over time.

Post-Surgical Recovery is enhanced by guided rehabilitation. Our physiotherapists work closely with your surgical team's guidelines to restore range of motion, rebuild strength, and help you return to the activities that matter most. We do post-surgical rehab for joint replacements, ligament repairs, spinal procedures, abdominal surgeries and more. (Please note that AHS does not cover the cost for treatment at Thrive).

Mobility Limitations are common; whether caused by aging, injury, neurological changes, or a sedentary lifestyle, restricted mobility affects quality of life. Physiotherapy at our South Edmonton clinic focuses on restoring functional movement through targeted exercises, joint mobilization, balance retraining and education.

Personalized Rehabilitation Programs

No two people heal the same way. Your recovery program at Thrive Therapy is built around your specific presentation, your goals, and the activities you want to return to, not a generic protocol.

Exercise-based rehabilitation is central to how we help you recover. After hands-on treatment, your physiotherapist will prescribe a progressive home exercise program targeting the specific muscle groups, movement patterns, and ranges of motion relevant to your condition. These exercises are explained and demonstrated in-session so you feel confident doing them at home.

Mobility work focuses on restoring your body's ability to move through full, pain-free ranges of motion. Whether you've had surgery, a prolonged period of immobility, or a chronic condition that has limited your movement over time, mobility restoration is a gradual, guided process.

Strength recovery goes hand in hand with mobility. Rebuilding the strength around an injured joint or muscle is essential for protecting it from re-injury. Our physiotherapists use a phased approach, starting with gentle activation and progressing to functional strength as your healing advances.

Injury prevention is built into every rehabilitation program. We assess movement patterns, identify contributing factors that led to your injury in the first place, and teach you strategies to protect yourself going forward. If you're an athlete, this includes sport-specific movement screening and training guidance.

Physiotherapy

Our experienced physiotherapists work with you to help identify the root causes of your pain or dysfunction and then work with you to recover your abilities - whether in everyday life, work, or play. We use a combination of strategies and tailor our approach to your unique circumstances. We offer both traditional physiotherapy and physiotherapy with an IMS centered approach that uses advanced assessment and needling techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

The number of sessions varies depending on the nature and duration of your condition. Acute injuries often respond within 4 to 8 sessions. Chronic pain or post-surgical rehabilitation may require longer treatment courses. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic treatment timeline after your initial assessment.

Physiotherapy at Thrive Therapy Clinic is privately billed and is not covered by Alberta Health Care. Many extended health benefits plans through employers cover physiotherapy. Check with your insurance provider to confirm your coverage and whether a referral is required. We are not WCB-approved.

No. In Alberta, physiotherapy is a self-referral profession, which means you can book directly without a doctor's referral. Some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement purposes, so it's worth checking your policy before your first visit.

Your first appointment at our South Edmonton clinic is a full assessment. Your physiotherapist will take a detailed history, assess your movement, strength, and neurological function, and discuss your goals. Treatment often begins in the same session. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being treated, for example, shorts for a knee assessment or a tank top for a shoulder assessment.
